The sigbin... is a strong shadow creature... feeds on... it's made of...
Unconnected scraps of words floated in and out of Mara's consciousness as she struggled to stay focused. She could feel the pain just standing by, but didn't feel it actively -- Mara just knew that if she allowed herself to feel the pain it would spell the death of her. Was no one hearing this on the outside? she thought to herself.
Mara knew the answer, of course. Someone had timed this sigbin's entrance to the waking world perfectly, when the Mysteries was in chaos... she had just been fortunate enough to have seen it while it was small. Although that was no use now that it was larger than herself.
But it was very strange. This was a non-magic day, so the sigbin ostensibly wouldn't have time to grow larger. Someone went inside, released it today knowing that it would wreck its havoc the day after tomorrow. And the Department of Mysteries was the most magic intensive department in the whole Ministry -- it would have gotten humongous within minutes.
Now is not the time to think of conspiracy theories! The sigbin, how to kill the sigbin... thought Mara, wincing as the sigbin trampled on her back again. She beat on one of the legs/hands that kept her own leg pinned, wincing at the pain from the claws.
The sigbin... a shadow creature... shadow creatures often have a vulnerable point near its... its... Amara cursed her memory that worked slower in dangerous high adrenaline moments. Instead of powering up her brain, the adrenaline slowed it down to starts and stops.
The light had been circling around wildly, because of being kicked around by the sigbin's many appendages. As if by providence, one leg shot out and kicked something towards Amara, which hit her stomach with a huge plop.
The book!
She tried to move, but her arm just hung limply by her side. Absolutely not the time to think about broken arms... thought Mara. "Kameren, grab the book!"

Alex stepped around a corner, his stance defensive. He spotted Amara the same moment she saw him.
"Kameren, grab the book!"
Grinding his teeth, the auror dove forward, sliding under the black belly of the creature. He looped one arm around Amara’s shoulders, pulling her from under the beast as he grabbed the book with the other hand. He tugged her about ten feet with little regard for her broken arm. He rifled through the pages, but turned as the beast came clicking back out of the darkness.
“Here.” He shoved the book at Amara and stood up, circling the sigbin warily. “Find out how we can defeat it.” He demanded, not taking his eyes off the sigbin. It seemed to have stablized, though occasionally it twitched, skin rippling. Alex wondered idly how wide its range for magic was.

An involuntary groan slipped out of Amara's mouth as she was dragged to the corner by Alex, heedless of her disabled arm. The numbness was fading, her mind already starting to scream from the intense pain. It was nauseating, and Amara still needed her wits about her as they struggled with the monstrous sigbin. It was making all kinds of noise now and soon they'll be discovered.
... And then they'll all take out their wands and try to blast the thing, not knowing the sigbin feeds on magic. This is not going to be the end of the Department! Not on my watch! thought Mara, rising through the pain.
She gulped, opening the book with her better arm. "It has to be here somewhere... Mara, Mara think!"
A flash of a letter S caught her eye and Mara quickly went to it. "There, I found it! Kameren, the weak spot is the chest and the eyes! Go for those first!"
She scanned through the article, and nodded, knowing what she should do. The Muggle light Kameren had given was a bit far away, but it would serve a purpose. While Kameren kept the sigbin busy, Mara slowly inched towards the light, grabbing one empty bottle on the way.

She gulped, opening the book with her better arm. "It has to be here somewhere... Mara, Mara think!"
“Thinking’s good.” Alex said, not taking his eyes off the creature. “I’m a big fan of thinking but could you find it faster?” The creature struck out again with one of its bigger arms, its over-crowded mouth gaping horribly in some sort of leer. Alex ducked the trio of sharp, curving claws, moving forward to kick the closest support leg savagely.
A flash of a letter S caught her eye and Mara quickly went to it. "There, I found it! Kameren, the weak spot is the chest and the eyes! Go for those first!"
“Great. And which part is its chest?” Alex wanted to know, eyeing the twisted body. He did not relish trying to leap eight, nine feet. He eyed one of the thicker twisted limbs, wondering if he should try and climb it. The creature charged, Alex waited for the last second, then dodged to the side, grappling with a swinging limb. “I feel like we’re playing cat and mouse.” He told the creature, clinging determinably, despite being shaken and clawed by other limbs. He clambered up, hooking his fingers around the joint where the arm grew from the body.
“What am I supposed to do, just punch it?” He asked Amara, swinging a long leg over the creature’s back. He moved swiftly, trying to keep from being dislodged as the beast shrieked and pummelled and bucked. Alex gripped the beast with his legs, hunched his shoulders, and pounded away at the face.
[[ This is not my best. Bah. I hand the creature over to you -bows- ]]

No magic. Sigbins feed on magic and fear. I have to be cold. Colder than cold. Mara gulped, trying to stop her shivers. The sigbin was shrieking now, it's mouth gaping wide open -- Alex was doing a very great job of distracting it from it's most vulnerable point.
"Alright Kameren! Try to keep it in one place!" she shouted, smashing the empty glass on one of the shelves and breaking it into several pieces. Choosing the biggest piece of glass, Mara gulped.
What she was about to do was probably going to cost her more than the limp arm by her side. The pain was excruciating, though dulled -- maybe because of the pounding in her head. Or maybe because her body didn't know what it was supposed to feel anymore, just that it hurt. In so many places.
The sigbin and Alex struggled near the center of the almost cleared room, their shape more clear now because of the way her eyes had adjusted to the near darkness. Alex was pounding on the face, and Mara admired his nerve... the sigbin had a mostly melted in, grotesque liquidy mush for a face, hardly something anyone could stomach. Maybe because Alex didn't quite see what he was pounding at...
With her right hand clutching the glass (the book had said sharp object, but you were free to interpret that any way you wanted to) Amara slowly inched her way toward the flailing bodies in the center. She felt a weird clutching in her gut area, knowing that she was directly going in the path of pain. This was never in the job description they handed her -- and Mara thought she may have never stepped into this role if she had known.
Mara neared the sigbin, it's many hands trying to rip Alex off it's back and face. The other hands were steady, keeping the sigbin upright but they weren't paying much attention to anyone else -- which was good for the witch currently trying to slide under it. In the darkness, Mara could see that faint flex, what would have been a solar plexus if the sigbin was human.
"Kameren, close your eyes!"
With all her strength, Mara reached back and stabbed the sigbin at it's center, and closed her own eyes shut as bright light illuminated the entire room.
And then it was silent.

"Alright Kameren! Try to keep it in one place!"
Alex was gritting his teeth as he tried to stay in place, trying to keep from being thrown off by the monster, or he would have had a few choice words to say to miss Deocaris. Try to keep it in one place, indeed. What did she expect, ropes?
His fists thudded wetly on the upturned, pasty face. It floated against the darkness that was the creature’s body. He tried not to think too hard about the wetness that trickled down his wrists to mingle with the wetness that seeped from the sigbin’s face as Alex attempted to hook his fingers in the monster’s eyes.
"Kameren, close your eyes!"
Alex reacted slowly, reluctant to let the creature out of his sight. As he shut them, he saw a bright light fill the room. The tall auror thumped to the floor, a groan escaping him as the breath was knocked out of him. He lay on his back, trying to breath, before he finally looked over at Amara.
“All in one piece?”

“All in one piece?”
Mara opened her eyes slowly, her breaths coming out slow and easy. I'm alive. I'm still alive. I faced a monster and I'm alive. Oh my Merlin!!
She shut them again, wincing at the whole big mass of pain that her body had become. Even opening her eyes had been a bit of work. What would moving her head be like? She decided to try that for another time.
"You can say that." murmured Amara, nearly groaning at the energy that simple phrase needed. She needed a Healer. She needed a psychiatrist. She needed a new career, for Merlin's sake!!
Calm down, calm down!!! Why are you having the shakes? It's over, darn you, get a grip Deocaris! she told herself, mentally putting herself in a tight grip.
Rushing sounds told her they had been discovered, and the spelled lights were turned on. A puddle of green, black and dark brown goo was in the middle of the room, and in the puddle was incidentally the two heroes of this story.
"Do I want to know what we are on?" asked Mara, closing her eyes as the people rushed towards them, muttering and talking and discussing about what could have happened. "Never mind. Thanks, by the way." she said, coughing a little. "For, uhm... the saving and holding up. Stuff. Ehem."

"You can say that."
“Good.” Alex said shortly, trying to sit up. He didn’t make it far before his head and stomach rebelled. He dropped back down, only now noticing that they lay in a puddle of goo. He closed his eyes. Ew.
"Do I want to know what we are on?"
“No.” Alex offered, cracking his eyes open as he observed the people gathering around. Who had unleashed the sigbin? As they were gathered up, Alex craned his neck, looking for his wand. He whispered a quick accio and was gratified to feel it return. He flicked his wand and the flute, still back on the table he had laid it on, disappeared back into the drawer he had pulled it from.
"Never mind. Thanks, by the way." she said, coughing a little. "For, uhm... the saving and holding up. Stuff. Ehem."
“Not a problem.” Alex muttered as he was jostled. They were on stretchers, which was fine for him. He didn’t care to sit up at the moment.
