"Wait, so if the Ministry's magic has somehow stopped, wouldn't people be noticing that the elevators aren't opening? Surely there has have to been employees that are trying to get to another floor by now." Curse stared at Black unblinkingly as he spoke. He closed his eyes, shaking his head from side to side. "And wouldn't basically everything come to a standstill within the Ministry itself? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm in no means familiar with how this building operates."
"I suppose if most of the lifts aren't working they're all trying to get to all of the lifts as well as ours... and ours is a low priority."
"And knowing we're stuck here doesn't mean that they know how to get us out. I've never seen the lifts act like this before..." Curse laid an ear to the wall of the lift, listening for something, anything that would indicate what was wrong with the lifts. What was wrong?
The ex-auror rolled his eyes as Tynan tested to see if other magic was working. Because I'm one of the rare people who are born with an extra screwdriver-shaped appendage on my hand... He thought of the spell he had used only a few minutes earlier. "How far from the department floor do you think we are?"
"The Atrium is below us. That's an easy fifty meters, at least," Curse's emerald eyes moved to the new Head Auror, silently pleading him not to try it, "The doors to the lift will most likely be closed, which would lead you to have to fall into the basement. You don't want to go into the basement." Something rarely seen flashed across Curse's face at his mention of the Ministry basement: a pang of fear. Tynan would find out about that soon enough, once he was officially sworn in as Head Auror.
The group in the elevator collectively jumped as a shower of sparks burst forth from the wires the intern was working on. Curse laughed, stepping forward as Yvonne jumped back. "Brilliant! You did it, Yvonne! You're lucky to have such an eager and intelligent intern, Ms. Deocaris," Curse glanced back at the two with a wry smile; it was true, Amara could have much worse. Curse had definitely seen worse than Yvonne Oronofsky. Interns were like children; young, easily excited, and had entirely no idea what they were doing. It was the mentor's job to make sure they gained the knowledge they needed, but also that they kept the childish spark they came with as a junior. That childish spark was what made the best Ministry workers what they were.
The ex-auror's hand glowed white with a light shielding spell as he kept the sparks at bay. "We've somehow managed to tap into electricity..." Curse grinned, surprised and excited by the strange happenings. "Now all we need to do is figure out which wire tells the elevator to go 'up'," Curse started taking black and red wires and lightly connecting them. His speech trailed off as he concentrated, and a momentary silence fell upon the group.
He turned around, unsettled by the silence. He hated the feeling of being watched. Especially when he was blatantly guessing about something. "Well? Talk amongst yourselves or something. This isn't bloody brain surgery."
