"That's a peculiar object. Have you stopped using he quartz ball that dad gave you? I thought you'd never part from that thing."
Jack gave his brother a look of mock horror, turning the glowing sphere and pressing a flat space on the bottom. Numbers floated above the ball. “Don’t be rude, Theodore. Georgie made this for my birthday last year.”
He set the ball down, returning to his table. The urgency in the back of his mind was less, there was less of a press to get his research done, and done now. He rested his palm lightly on the paper that hid the artefact. He stared at the mess, his mind working. How often had he been home in the last week? Were George and Annie ok?
Merlin, what kind of father was he?
A hand descended on the minister’s shoulder, he looked up at Salt. Both Alex and Theo were gone. “They’re fine, Minister.” Salt said, his expression as carefully schooled as ever. “Though I would advise you to visit your brother. You may find what you seek.”
Jack opened his mouth to speak, to tell his advisor once again what was wrong, what directed his thoughts and actions so often. He opened his mouth and dropped to the floor, writhing in pain. He bit his lip until it bled, refusing to give the satisfaction of screaming with the agony. Salt watched, and bent to help his employer up when the episode was done.
“Best to not speak, sir.” Was all he said, wetting a cloth and cleaning the blood from Jack’s face. “You know it never works.”
