"Muuuuuuuuuuuuuum. Mum. Please, please can we go now?!" Max Kameren-Deville's round, eager green eyes pleaded with his mother, who smiled patiently at him from behind the boutique counter.
This was infuriating. They had been at his mum's boutique since seven, when his father had dropped him off. If the whole week was going to be this way, Max would just retreat back into the Magical World now.
"I'm sorry, love, but Peter and I have to work and your dad said you can't be left alone until your letter comes." The young wizard groaned. Ironically, he hated it when his parents were getting along. When Kris and Amelia were actually speaking to each other Max found he got away with things far less.
Max's growing magic was currently uncontrollable, and someone needed to be around to take care of it if if he accidentally did something. Max didn't see how this was better; if he released a spell in the middle of a downtown Muggle London boutique, the damage would be worse. The Ministry would have to erase everyone's minds and Max would be dragged off to Azkaban forever. His mum wouldn't remember him and his little brother would never get to meet him.
"Why couldn't you have gotten a day off?" Max sighed, sinking to the floor in defeat behind the counter. Amelia smiled reassuringly, kissing her son on the top of his head and rustling his messy hair. He knew why; his mum and Peter were saving their days off for the new baby. Baby this, baby that. The Beauregard's were driving him bonkers with all this baby talk.
"It'll all be over soon, I promise. There's a sandwich place down the road, let's say we close up in a little while and go for lunch? You still eat sandwiches, right?" Max's eyes lit up at the thought of going somewhere different, and he smiled as he nodded. Amelia laughed, crouching down awkwardly with her growing belly to embrace the boy. Max kneeled, trying to save his mum the effort.
"Do they have pasta sandwiches?"
"What?"
"...Nevermind." Max shook his head and smiled, using the counter to pull himself to his feet. One more go-round of the boutique would do to keep him from dying of boredom, at least. His mum didn't let him play with the objects she sold, but it didn't hurt to look. Amelia smiled at him before disappearing into the back room. Max smiled back, that smile fading as he made his circle around the small shop.
dingling...
Max's head snapped up at the sound of the door opening, his head turning towards the back room. "Mum, people!" He called, before turning back to the doorway. He stopped as recognition dawned in his eyes.
