The Auror department was in the process of devolving into chaos. Tynan exited his office and was instantly beset upon by at least five people shouting and demanding to know what was going on. Reports flew overhead, getting mixed up and heading to the wrong desks. Reporters tried to shove their way in and glean tidbits from the aurors.
"Sonorus." Tynan pointed his wand at his throat and muttered the spell. Then, his voice projected magically, he shouted over the noise.
"ENOUGH!"
Silence cut through the crowd like a knife. Everyone was eager to know what exactly was going on, and they all turned to Tynan.
"Reporters, out!" He barked pointing to the lift. As they threw him mutinous glances before shuffling into the lift, Eoin threw them a bone. "All the Ministry is prepared to say right now is that there has been an attack reported in Godric's Hollow by the Masked Lady, Mosrael. If you need to know more, talk to the liason office."
Once the reporters were gone, Eoin focused on his Aurors. "All right, what do we know? Mosrael attacked the Kameren house. Casualties were reported, but we don't know names. The attack is over, Mosrael and her people are gone now." The blonde man folded his arms over his chest.
"Do we have any other updates on the situation?"

"Do we have any other updates on the situation?"
Cain passed the reporters on their way into the lift, ignoring their grumbles. His face was grim, and he hadn’t bothered to change his clothes. The knees of his jeans were shredded and a bandage covered a particularly deep laceration on his left palm. He shoved through the aurors, approaching Tynan.
“I do.” He cradled a wrapped object in his right hand, against his chest. One of the aurors turned to look at him and he clutched it tighter, feeling possessive. He moved closer to Tynan, leaning in so only he could hear.
“I need to talk to you, Tynan. Alone.”

Eoin saw the expression on the man's face, his posture and the hand he clutched to his chest, as if protecting something against his heart. The urgency of the matter was stamped all over his face.
The Head Auror beckoned two Aurors over and gave them curt instructions. "Alwell, you handle organizing reports of the situation. Merreth, I want an investigative team on the scene ASAP. Make sure it's only seasoned aurors, I don't want any newbies to be freaking out in their first battleground. Get me a detailed layout of the scene. I want to know what happened. I'll be in my office."
He strode over to Cain and led him to the Head Auror's office. Once the door was shut and the blinds close, Tynan turned to Cain. "What's this all about then, Cain?"

"What's this all about then, Cain?"
“First, do you even know where Kameren is now?” The blond eyed his old boss shrewdly, seeing the answer to his question. “Exactly. Let me just inform you, then, that he entered our apartment three hours ago. They found the Fletcher boy. And this.”
There was a hollow thunk as he set the wrapped Stone on Eoin’s desk, pulling himself away with a shudder. He forced his eyes away, taking a few more stuttered steps towards the opposite wall. He kept his eyes averted, trembling with the songs in his head. The Stone offered soothing, reached out for its keeper, the man who had woken it, who had fed it magic and blood. Scarlet’s song curled its fingers into his mind, pressing light fingers against the scars caused by her death.
“Yy-you have to keep that locked away. I can’t deal with it right now.” He gulped and looked at Eoin with anguished eyes. “She’s d… dead, Eoin. I don’t know how…. Its not like I didn’t want it, but--” He covered his face with his arms. “It hurts so…”

When the Stone thunked against the solid oak desk, Eoin instantly felt its alien presence in the room. He'd heard reports, only rumors really, of this thing. And judging by the way Cain acted as though it had a magnetic pull on his soul, the rumors were accurate. Sensing Cain's discomfort, he drew his wand and inscribed a circled around the Stone in glowing runes. The spell instantly contained the artifact's aura. Eventually the dark magic would cause the spell to decay, but it was something that was used by the department when they needed to transport items of uncertain origin or dark magic.
"I'll keep it locked away," Eoin's steady gaze met Cain's, reassuring him firmly. "And it's location a secret. I understand only partially what this thing can do. Care to enlighten me?"
He set his wand on the desk and folded his arms. "The boy, is Emery all right? And by she, do you mean the woman called Scarlet? You say she's dead." Putting Curse in the same room as that...woman. Eoin guessed what had happened. She stood between the man and his son, and was in the act of things dark and malignant. Curse wouldn't kill her out of some form of self-righteousness, but if he had to take measures to find Max...Eoin didn't need to ask how she'd died.
"So Kameren was there, was he alone? Was his brother there with him? And where did they go after that?" Eoin studied Cain. He certainly needed a mediwizard too, but he wouldn't push him to see one. "Could I at least offer you some chocolate or tea? I keep a block of Honeydukes in my desk. I guess the Hogwarts nurse had a good influence on me during my time there."

It was like there was a sudden vacuum, the pull at his mind ceased. For a moment he found himself missing it, but in almost the same instant there was relief. He sighed and lowered his arms, not feeling so bombarded. He gave Eoin a look of thanks.
"I'll keep it locked away," Eoin's steady gaze met Cain's, reassuring him firmly. "And it's location a secret. I understand only partially what this thing can do. Care to enlighten me?"
Cain shook his head, careful not to look at the Stone. He was afraid he’d pick it up, lift it up and carry it away, recede into the wreck he’d been. He’d hated the Shadowstealer and its work, but after so long, he needed it too. “Your demons, and the magic flux. They only scratch the surface… I--” He paused. He didn’t want to bare his very soul before this man. He couldn’t reveal his link to Scarlet, even after his escape. “I couldn’t research it all before. Now I can destroy it.”
He set his wand on the desk and folded his arms. "The boy, is Emery all right? And by she, do you mean the woman called Scarlet? You say she's dead."
“Don’t doubt my source.” he warned. “She’s dead. Emery’s in the hospital-- they say he’ll be fine.”
“He had to be-- Alex doesn’t have the kind of dark magic it took to kill her.” He shook his head and edged away from the desk and the object on it. He’d spent so much of the last two years of his life affected by it in one way or another. Researching it to save Caleigh’s life. Operating it to keep her safe-- living through his insanity after he escaped it. “I don’t know. I don’t know.” He was frustrated. Just when he’d started getting his life together, when he’d hoped to take a job again… this. He shot a glare at the Stone.
“What now?” He steeled himself and met the Head Auror’s eyes resolutely.

"What now?" Eoin's sharp eyes studied the seemingly insignificant item on his desk. He wasn't the type to rush into things, so the Head Auror took a moment to run over the options forming in his mind. Blue eyes flicked to Cain's strained face, then back at the Stone.
Eoin opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a velvet cloth, one he used for polishing and dusting in his office, and flicked it over the Stone. Then Eoin also produced a slice of dark chocolate, which he handed to Cain. "Eat this. As your superior I'm making that an order." He sat back in his chair and studied the curse-breaker.
"First, you need to go home, get some rest. We can handle the situation well enough for now. I do want to know more about this thing," Tynan nodded at the Stone. "So I'll have someone analyze it. But there's only one person I'll entrust it to, since this thing is definitely on a need-to-know status. And the person in Mysteries I know can be trusted with it. Anything I should warn her about?"
"As for Emery, I'm going to post an auror at his room for the next couple of days. For observation, and just in case he needs protection. Now, do you need anything?" The auror fixed Cain with a pointed stare. "I'm going to be keeping tabs on you for a bit, just to make sure you're honestly all right, and also just to be on the safe side. You understand, I hope? Now," Eoin leaned forward. "What are your plans from here, aside from getting some rest?"

Cain had a mouthful of chocolate, he started and spat chunks of chocolate in his surprise. “NO!” He looked shocked, his eyes wide, almost fearful. “You can’t give that to anyone else! It will latch on… it will destroy them!” He stood straight, his blue eyes burning into Tynan’s. “I didn’t bring it here so you can analyze it, Tynan. I brought it to keep it safe. It doesn’t need analyzing. It needs destroying, and I’m not willing to endanger another life with that. I already have an idea on what I’ll have to do to do it.
“I’m sorry Tynan, but it really is not your choice to make.”
"What are your plans from here, aside from getting some rest?"
“I don’t need a babysitter, Tynan. I just need to destroy the Shadowstealer. Its not here to give you a new toy. Its here to stay safe until I know the right way to get rid of it.”
