Ring, d-ding, d-ding...
Curse's eyes glanced up at the door from over a student's cauldron. looking around at the class of sixth years. "Alright, class, that'll be the end of our first class! Remember, I want a roll of parchment on the various potion categories and how the potions we discussed in class relate. Next week we're starting N.E.W.T. training!"
A few of Professor Kameren's students acknowledged his words, but the rest sighed and glumly exited the dungeons. Most students were very fond of getting homework on the first day, but Curse had too much to prep Sixth Years for their testing to waste even one class. He sighed, putting out the various cauldron fires and going to a cupboard to get bottles for the various potions he'd prepared. The dungeons quieted as the students left, until he was the only one left. Well, almost.
"Professor Kameren?"
"Hmm?" Curse glanced over his shoulder, pulling down several potion bottles as he turned to the student's voice. The Slytherin sixth year shuffled awkwardly. "Ah, hello Ruby. How was your summer?"
"Good." She smiled sheepishly, tucking a lock of dark brown hair behind her ear as she watched the Potions Master go about his work. "How was yours?"
"Terrible." Curse said it simply with a slight shrug. Everyone knew about the attack on his house, the kidnapping of his son. It had been heavily covered by the Prophet. No one could pretend to wonder what kind of summer Curse Kameren had. "School will be refreshing, though. I daresay I've missed teaching classes. Can I help you with something?"
"Well, actually..." Ruby sat down on a stool, leaning on one of the work stations as she looked up at him. "I need some advice."
"Alright." Curse put a stopper on the final bottle, setting it next to its respective cauldron and pulling up a stool across from his student. "I'll see what I can do. Shoot."
"Well, there's this boy." Oh, Merlin. Boy troubles. It was times like this Curse was glad he had a son. Ruby shifted awkwardly, wringing her hands on the table between them. "Well, guy. Man, I guess. I dunno. Anyway, I've liked him since he started here last year, and I've been thinking about him all summer. I'm just too scared he won't like me back. It's a bit odd."
"Has he done anything to make you think he doesn't like you?"
"No, not really." Ruby smiled slightly, her eyes downcast on the table as she twiddled her thumbs.
"Well, then why not?" Curse shrugged, leaning forward onto the counter. "Go for it. He might like yo--"
Next thing he knew, she was on him. Ruby practically leaped over the table, locking lips with a shocked Curse before he could push her away. He practically stumbled backwards off the chair, getting on the opposite side of the counter from Ruby once again.
"Merlin, Ruby. Come on. You're a student." The tops of the Potions Master's ears burned a hot red with embarrassment; he had been warned about this sort of thing when he taught at University, but he hadn't expected such a forward student at Hogwarts. Sure, the occasional crush that his friends could use to poke fun at him, but not this.
Ruby's eyes fell to the floor, her dark hair covering her face. "I'm sorry, I just thought... well, my mum and dad are ten years apart from each other..."
"Ruby, I'm twenty-eight. You're fourteen--"
"fifteen!" Ruby stuttered, tears dropping from her downcast head onto the dungeon floor. Curse sighed, warily resuming his position on the stool next to her.
"Come on, Ruby. Don't cry please. You just startled me," Curse pulled up a stool for her, meeting her eyes warily. He was concerned for her, yes, but he did his best not to convey any sort of affection back. What had he done to spark this in the first place? "It's just, look at it like this: I'm much older. My son is closer to you in age than I am. I'm your teacher. And I'm engaged. That's a lot on the shoulders of a twenty-eight year old, let alone a fifteen year old." He smiled slightly as she looked up, tears leaving her eyes. "I think it's better if we stay friends, and you find a boy closer to you in age. Alright?"
Ruby nodded sheepishly. "Sorry," she muttered timidly (oh, now she was timid.), picking up her book bag and scurrying out the door as quickly as she could.
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
"Did you hear about Ruby Selwyn kissing Professor Kameren after sixth-year potions today?"
"What?! No, I didn't! Is that why he can't see Max? I heard they have a separate Potions tutor for him..."
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
How could he have not seen this coming?
Curse wanted to beat his head against the wall, and it was only the first day. He should have known this would happen eventually; he had always been a frequent subject of gossip at the Ministry, and with Hogwarts filled with young gossipy teenagers, it was bound to happen again. The trouble with the students was they were much worse at being careful Curse didn't hear it.
The Potions Master looked around surreptitiously before lighting a cigarette. He took comfort in the smoke as he breathed it upwards. It seemed not even at Hogwarts was his life easy lately; Amelia had sent a letter to the Headmistress, asking if her son could have a separate Potions professor due to the current family troubles they were having with Max's Potions-Master father. Siara hadn't really had a choice but to comply. Curse had seen Max for the first time in weeks at the Opening Feast, but still didn't have the chance to speak to him. He missed his family, how they were back when they were whole. He could hardly see Arianna as well, now that school started. His home in Godric's Hollow was still in ruins and Curse hadn't a choice but to stay at Hogwarts, far away from Arianna in London.
The professor ran a hand through his hair quickly putting out his cigarette as he heard someone coming down the hall.
ooc: Jeez, that was a doozy. Skip to the end if you want to rp, the rest of it is just context. I'd welcome anyone to join! =)
