The third step of the fifth rotating stair was fond of grabbing at students. It seemed to like trapping them and keep them late for class. Though it was inanimate, even the most practical of students had to admit there was a certain feeling of glee in the way it released them only after they were more than half an hour late to class. Student usually jumped from the first step to the fifth, if they could manage it (they were rather small steps) or just avoided the fifth rotating stair altogether.
Nuriko hopped down a step, admiring her handiwork. A simple charm (in her eyes) and the third stair was now the first stair. (For exactly two hours and twenty-nine minutes, anyway.) The cheery Ravenclaw felt this was only fitting, as the first week of school needed a properly executed prank.
She tucked her wand into the side of her knee-high soft suede boots and grinned, her hair shifting to a mischievious shade of purple as she turned and headed back down the stairs.

"Good Morning, Miss Elswyth." Tor stood silently upon the second step, his hands clasped behind his back and his head slightly tilted to the side, waiting for Nuriko to all but fumble in to him. He had watched, with great interest, as the Ravenclaw student worked a charm upon the rotating steps they now occupied. He wondered when she would turn around and see him. He was bemused but did not show it.
"You are amazingly coordinated for such an early hour. I hope that you bring this degree of dedication to class this afternoon. Crystal balls don't terrorize the students like the infamous third step but detention certainly does."

"Good Morning, Miss Elswyth."
Drat! To be found out so soon after executing her prank! Certainly this wasn't fair, she hadn't even had a chance to see someone trapped on it yet! The ravenclaw turned, not showing a hint of guilt (look guilty, and you are guilty) as she grinned up at the professor. "'Mornin' Professor!" She greeted him cheerily.
"You are amazingly coordinated for such an early hour. I hope that you bring this degree of dedication to class this afternoon. Crystal balls don't terrorize the students like the infamous third step but detention certainly does."
The student's grin wilted slightly, and she looked down at her feet. "I'm not sure I follow sir, I'm no more coordinated now than I usually am." Her gaze returned to his, quizzical.

"Well, if that's the case then if I require charmed steps at 3am I will be sure to call on you. I respect a person who is always at the ready. It also means that you can reverse your handiwork without delay. Please retrieve your wand, Miss Elswyth. Let's celebrate the 5 house points we're docking from Ravenclaw with a renovation. First step back to the third, if you please."
Tor stood aside but maintained his focus on Nuri to ensure she complied.
"If you could please have this done before the bell for session. There are a few gentle spirits in the first year who are far less coordinated, I'm afraid."

With a sigh that was more for the loss of her handiwork than anything, Nuri pulled her wand from her boot, advancing back up the stairs, arriving at the fourth stair. She waved her wand in a complex manuever before muttering a phrase.
"If you could please have this done before the bell for session. There are a few gentle spirits in the first year who are far less coordinated, I'm afraid."
"Oh, its already done." Nuriko grinned, looking up at Professor Tor, her mood not significantly troubled by the incident. It did get boring, never being caught. All part of the adventure, was how she viewed it.
"I never sleep," she continued, "not enough to count, anyways. But I'm sure you wouldn't need me to charm anything, less need a stair, at three in the a.m."

"You'd be surprised," Tor replied quietly, momentarily lost in a memory.
"And that makes two of us. Tell me, what keeps you awake at night? Given your curriculum, I would think you would find yourself asleep as soon as you hit the pillow." Tor descended back to the first step, ensuring it was no longer charmed and then hovered his boot above the third, being careful to not get caught in its animation.
"Perfect."

"You'd be surprised," Tor replied quietly, momentarily lost in a memory.
“By what, Professor?” Nuri asked, picking up a stray chip of rock and poking at the third step from the top, watching with fascination as the chip was absorbed.
"And that makes two of us. Tell me, what keeps you awake at night? Given your curriculum, I would think you would find yourself asleep as soon as you hit the pillow."
Nuriko hopped back a step so she could continue to observe the professor without straining her neck, a look of ponderment on her face. “Oh, nothing especially, Proff. I guess I just don’t need as much sleep as most.” She cocked her head, stars and moons in blue crossing her forehead. “What keeps you awake?”
"Perfect."
She couldn’t resist a little pride: “Well, I made the charm myself.” so of course!

“What keeps you awake?” “Well, I made the charm myself.”
Vladek was thankful that Nuriko's comment came so soon after her question. He relaxed a little, the severity in his features softening. He almost smiled at her earnestness.
"Yes, I can see that. It is important that you take pride in what you do, Nuriko, and that you are as equally accountable for it. Through honesty comes respect, and through respect honour."
The professor ascended from the second step to the fourth, continuing upward with silent footfalls. The bell for first session rang seconds later.
"Your energy will serve you well in class," his voice carried as he continued to climb away from Nuriko, "and Miss Elsywth - "
Vladek turned, a slight glint in his eye,
"You are going to want to watch your quantity of Wolfsbane in Potions today. Your partner will forget she's already added it to the cauldron. Could be an explosive outcome." He winked, almost imperceptibly. "See you in class."
