Rose flinched as her stomach growled loudly. She rolled over in bed as she tried to ignore it but it wasn’t going to happen. The gnawing pain of hunger ate away at her inside. Most students did not become this hungry after missing just one meal but Rose on the other hand needed food. She couldn’t last long without eating. What had she been thinking when she missed dinner to study? She was going to pass that test the next morning but she may never make it. She had eaten last over eight hours ago. To many people, it wasn’t too long but to Rose, it was a decade.
Her stomach gave another rumbling roar, finally forcing the girl to her feet. Her bare toes touched the cold wooden floor and retracted. It was going to be a long walk to the kitchens. First, she had to escape the dorms without a sound so she didn’t awake her roommates, one of which was a prefect, because they would probably stop her. Then, she had to make her way down to the lower levels from Gryffindor Tower to reach the Kitchen. Once inside though, there would only be the house elves which would give her whatever food she wanted. Then, the way back was just as perilous just without the growling stomach to give away her location.
Putting on her sweater shirt over her thin night shirt and a pair of jeans in replace of her sleeping short, she started out of the dorm. The girl had briefly considered putting on shoes but they would cause more noise than if she went on barefooted. Years of running around barefoot during summer were finally paying off with the thick calluses that protected her feet.
Her escape from the Gryffindor Common Room was a success, the only noise being the Fat Lady who warned her about night excursions which were promptly ignored. As Rose headed through the hallways of silent Hogwarts, she remembered how terrifying her first late night trip was. She was only a first year when an older student had told her about the secret to accessing the kitchens. That very night, she was very hungry, having only very little time to eat. She decided to use this new knowledge to escape to the kitchens. She had jumped at every noise, ducked around corners at every voice, and nearly gave herself a heart attack as she made her way to the kitchen.
Now, almost four years later, the Gryffindor moved through the halls with ease. She was not afraid of teachers coming around the corner and catching her. It was long ago when she figured which teachers patrolled which halls when. Judging by her watch, it was midnight. Any teachers that were still awake would be patrolling the dungeons, and some of the lower corridors. As long as Rose avoided those, she should be able to make it to the kitchens without being disturbed.
It only took ten minutes to reach the kitchens, Rose had been moving faster than usual. Checking around the corners of the corridor to make sure that no teacher would be coming, the girl reached out a single finger and tickled the pear of the painting. The giggle it gave was deafening, at least to the girl who had been walking through the silent halls. It seemed to echo down the halls, causing the girl to flinch. She couldn’t get discovered now. It would be an embarrassing walk up back to the Gryffindor Tower. Also, she couldn’t lose any points from her house. This early in the year, she would never be forgiven.
