Name: Mordecai 'Mort' Wilhelm Caulfield, Order of Merlin 1st class and Honored Member of the Wizengamot.
Age: 52
Birthdate/place: 10-09-1968
Species: Wizard
Gender: Male
Family:
Sharon Jane Caulfield - wife, deceased.
Mercy Norah Caulfield - daughter, witch. 23.
Elaina Margaret Schmidt - sister, 66. retired.
Vladlena Dalia Black - sister, 57. Unspeakable.
Kirk Anton Caulfield - brother, auror. deceased.
Wilhelm Michael Caulfield - father, deceased.
Amina Helen Caulfield - mother, deceased.
Mort's family is a muggleborn anomaly: his muggle parents conceived and raised four magical children, a coincidence rarely heard of.
Appearance:
Build/height- Mort stands at 5'11", with a stocky, rough build that centers around his shoulders and chest. He is relatively fit for his age, though he doesn't go out of his way to work out beyond taking the dog for a nightly walk.
General Description- Though he has no scars or distinguishing markings, there is never the less something off-putting about Mordecai Caulfield. His oval-shaped face is tanned and weathered, with grey whiskers crowing on his sun-spotted cheeks. Deep sea-blue eyes peer out from under grizzled eyebrows, and his hair grows dark auburn and curled, with soft specks of grey. He keeps it cut short and tucked under his characteristic black bowler hat.
Mort carries himself strongly, the weight of his personality showing in every movement he makes. He tends to move with his shoulders slumped forward, a habit that often makes him look hunched.
For clothing, while at work Mort wears traditional wizard robes, with a collared muggle shirt and pants underneath, always with a black tie. When he isn't working, however, Mort wears jeans and shirts with jackets. Anything that's comfortable, really. The only constant in his clothing is his black bowler hat; it was given to him by Cornelius Fudge the day of his resignation. He claims he wears it 'to keep the mind of a foolish man on the outside of my head, not inside'.
Mort also still wears his wedding ring, though it was six years ago that his wife passed.
Possessions- Mort lives in a small 2-bedroom cottage on the Scottish countryside, a home he's lived in since he and his wife were newlyweds. It was originally a run-down old cottage, but he painstakingly remodels and rebuilds it in his spare time.
Mort has a large black Newfoundland named Johann, though the dog also answers to 'Joe' for short. The massive dog is Mort's best friend, his loyal pet who has stayed beside him since the years after his wife's passing.
Personality:
Temperment/Mental Attributes-
Mordecai Caulfield is a man of few words, and simple words at that. This shouldn't be mistaken for simplemindedness, however, as Mordecai is a very intelligent fellow. He is often ahead of others he speaks to in grasping concepts, but he does not see his talented mind as a reason to speak incessantly. He is exceptionally gifted with logic and decision-making, and has lead his Ministry department into the best, most high-functioning decade to date. Mort sees no special merit in these feats, however, and sees this as simply doing his job. If more people did their jobs properly, Mort believes, then the Ministry and the Wizarding World wouldn't be in its current state.
As sparing Mort is with his words, his patience does not match his silence. He has very little patience for fools, and can very quickly make up his mind on whether or not someone is worth his time. To those whose opinion he does not value, Mort is short and sarcastic. He marvels at the stupidity of fools, and is unafraid to tell exactly what he thinks of them.
Mort is immutably honest. He does not care to season his words to appease those around him; to him, if they can't handle the truth, then they don't deserve to be spared from it to begin with. He has caused many a scandal with his fearless words, but to those, he replies with only a shrug. He rarely apologizes for anything, least of all the things he says.
Yet, in private, Mort has a distinctly softer side. He cares deeply for his daughter and sisters, and cared almost even more so for his wife and brother. He will go to the ends of the earth to help any of them with anything they need, and would sacrifice his own comfort for theirs without a thought. He always welcomes a visit from his family or a close friend, and is fiercely loyal to anyone he develops a positive relationship with.
Mort has a distinct interest in music. He plays trumpet and piano, and enjoys the jazz genre of music.
Those relationships take time to build, however, as Mort is slow to trust anyone. He has been on the wrong side of quite a few deals in his life, and is wary of anyone who might have different motives. His mistrust can endure for years, until a certain action or certain words can miraculously earn the man's trust.
The final trait worth mentioning of Mort's intense grief. He has trouble letting go of his lost loved ones. He was extremely close to his brother, and the loss of his wife was devastating to him. Years later, Mordecai still hasn't truly come to terms with the loss of his loved ones, and though he lets on that he has, his grief can still be seen behind closed doors.

History-
Mordecai Wilhelm Caulfield was born on an autumn afternoon to a family of his mother, father, and two sisters. The world was a simpler time then, an he and his family grew and lived happily, thriving and growing larger with the addition of Mort's younger brother Kirk a few years later. The family lived on a farm; Mort learned the value of a hard day's work from an early age, being the eldest son of a farming family. Mort looked up to his father especially, learning his moral code and principals from his father's wisdom.
Mort's younger brother also looked up to him, and the brothers grew close in childhood. Strange coincidences were happening in the Caulfield family, however; soon, Mort's muggle parents were having to teach magical children, as one by one, each of the four muggle-born Caulfields got their Hogwarts letters.
Upon entering Hogwarts, each Caulfield went to a different house: Elaina, Mort's eldest sister, went to Ravenclaw. Vladlena was a prefect of the Hufflepuff house. Kirk was taken in by Gryffindor, and Mordecai became a Slytherin. The house fit well with Mort's logical cause-effect way of thinking, and he did well there. He was one of the few Slytherins that rarely exhibited or even witnessed negative activity from his house. Mort did well in school, getting adequate grades in his classes as well as starting a jazz club for the students, one of the first musical programs Hogwarts allowed.
Once Mort graduated, he wasn't sure what he wanted to do. So, naturally, he experimented: He lived in the Muggle world, experimented running shops on Diagon Alley, worked in the Leaky Cauldron, and even spent some time homeless, backpacking his way across Europe. He enjoyed living ruggedly, the freedom that came with having nowhere to be. Eventually, though, Mordecai decided where he belonged. At nineteen, Mort entered the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic. He and his younger brother, Kirk, entered at the same time: Mort to Mysteries, Kirk into the Junior Auror training program. They entered the Ministry during the first rise of Voldemort, and worked vigorously against him along with the rest of the Wizarding World.
The opportunity the Ministry gave Mort was exactly what the ambitious young wizard wanted, and he rose quickly to the role of Unspeakable before the first fall of Voldemort. Once the Department of Mysteries wasn't serving a war cause, however, Mordecai grew uneasy with his title; he didn't enjoy the endless studying, and the constant secrecy was distancing Mort from his once close family. His superiors noticed his disapproval of his Department, however, and offered him a transfer, to an open position of leading a Crisis Control team in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. Mort gladly took the position, greatly preferring the problem-solving and action of Accidents compared to Mysteries, and the opportunities to work alongside his brother; Accidents and Catastrophes frequently worked alongside Law Enforcement.
Years passed, and Mordecai's superiors took notice of his excellent work ethic once more; he rose again to head of the Catastrophic Defense Division, the largest division of the Department, right before the second rise of Lord Voldemort. Mordecai was present at the TriWizard Tournament the night the Dark Lord returned, was in charge of control and protection of the students, and was the one to console Amos Diggery upon the discovery of his son's dead body. The second battle against the Dark Lord was far worse than the first, and Mort held a heavy position in the fight. Alongside him the whole time was Kirk, who rose to Head Auror after Rufus Scrimgeour became Minister.
The war was short, but brutal; all the Caulfield siblings were present at the battle of Hogwarts School, and Mort was horrified by the terrible things he saw. Children getting cut down in their youth by corrupt wizards with little they could do but fight; their only hope rested on the shoulders of one of those children, and they had to do what they could to help Harry Potter stop the Death Eater's rampage permanently.
During that second war, however, there was a calm in Mordecai's storm; Sharon Savage, an auror in his brother's division, stepped into Mort's life and ran him down. Mort's hard, gruff exterior was easily taken down by Sharon. The two were inseparable; they simply belonged to each other. Mort fell deeply in love with Sharon, and as soon as the second war was over, they were married. A year later, their daughter Mercy was born. Mort has always described Mercy as 'his reason'; whenever things were difficult, or if he and Sharon were fighting, or if he was having family problems with his brother or sisters, Mort thought of his daughter as his reason to press onward. Mort has always been ever-present in his daughter’s life, and still is to this day.
After the success of the war against Voldemort and the extensive damage control and clean-up run by Mordecai’s division after the war, Mort was once again promoted, this time to the highest position of Head of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. He hesitantly took the position, but eventually grew strong in his leadership with the Department.
Right as life seemed to be settling down after the difficulty of war, a personal Catastrophe struck the Caulfield family. On a night drive home from visiting a friend’s cabin, Wilhelm and Amina Caulfield were struck by a drunk driver. They were both killed instantly; the other driver, however, walked free. It was here Mordecai’s disdain for the flimsy justice system of both sides to the United Kingdom’s government grew; Mort’s fascination and vindication for justice and fairness would become a focus bordering on obsession for Mort for years to come.
Sharing in his obsession with justice was his brother, Kirk. Kirk ran the auror department much harder from that point, taking on a junior auror of his own, Curse Kameren, who he groomed to eventually succeed him in the Head position. The skinny, eccentric Junor Auror was somewhat adopted by the family, and was seen often by the Caulfield family between assignments with Kirk.
Eventually, however, Kirk’s tight hold on the Auror Department would slip. On Kirk’s last assignment, he was working a simple raid with his Junior. The raid quickly turned to spellfire, and Kirk made his Junior flee, sacrificing himself for the younger wizard’s safety. Kirk was destroyed by dark wizard’s spells. Mort’s best friend, his younger brother, was killed. This wasn’t an accident; this was intent. Mordecai still carries the grief and anger from his brother’s murder, and it drives him in his endeavors.
Years passed, and eventually Mercy was old enough to attend Hogwarts. She was a Hufflepuff, like her mother. She progressed well in school, and both parents were very proud. Near the end of Mercy’s schooling, however, another concern arose for Sharon. She had been getting progressively more sick over the last few months, and was starting to grow violently so. Mordecai accompanied his wife to St. Mungo’s when she began coughing up blood.
Sharon Caulfield was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. Mordecai, Mercy and the rest of the Caulfield family supported her in a hard 9-month fight against the disease, but on January 11th, 2014, Sharon succumbed to her illness in the middle of the night, with her loved ones all around her.
Mort put on a strong face for his daughter and the rest of his family, but in truth, Mordecai didn’t know how he would go on. He constantly thinks of and misses his wife, always looking over her shoulder as if she may be waiting for him. He hides his sorrow well, however, still working hard as he helped his daughter get through the rest of Hogwarts, and later helping support her as she tried various reporting jobs. She eventually got a columnist job at the Daily Prophet, and Mort became an empty nester. The loneliness of an empty home was too much for Mort. Mercy helped to ease his pain by helping Mort find friendship in a small black puppy. Mort has been raising Johann since he was a puppy, and considers the dog one of his best friends.
Mort now lives from day to day, doing his best and working his hardest to keep peace in those around him. His job is to keep Catastrophes out of the Ministry, or at least out of the public eye. And, now that he has control over his own personal catastrophes, Mort is doing his best to keep this same solemn, sober peace among the Ministry as well. However, there have been whispers and rumors that Mr. Caulfield doesn’t take a liking to the new Minister and his sneaky ways. There has been talk of a revolution, and Mort has been thinking about becoming active in the politics of the Ministry once again.
