Cal had always been an avid reader, preferring the company of paper over people. She didn't have to pretend like she was always put together or able to say the right thing at the right time nor did she have to read them. They hid her, instead, something she always appreciated when she wanted to get away. It was no surprise that almost every surface in her small apartment had at least one book on it if not a small stack. However, since Cain had shown up in Hogsmeade, she'd finally started buying new books instead of constantly rereading, several of her favorites were beginning to fall apart.
Her brother had been going through books the way a rich woman goes through fashion trends, so she'd finally started buying new books. Ones that would maybe interest him more than the ones she read that could sometimes be rather mindless reads. As she entered the small bookshop, the attendant smiled at her. Cal was a well known customer here, in fact, they even sent her books on occasion just as a gift she was there so often. She picked her way through the aisles, picking up a book here and there, adding one to her stack occasionally and others discarded almost instantly.
It was a nice break to be here in the company of books. Not only had her brother shown up, but Cal's work had been exceedingly taxing the past few weeks. There had been a recent, very public, killing and she was dealing with the witnesses, trying to get as much information as she could so the office could just be rid of the nuisance that it was. On top of that, her brother had returned and he wasn't perfect, but he was Cain and she was just happy to have him back. She knew that she'd only survived because he did whatever it was they wanted for him and the idea had been weighing on her heavily. Cal would've preferred death than her brother going through that. A cold trickle ran down her spine and she shivered just thinking about it.
Lost in her thought, she didn't notice a figure in front of her until she'd collided with them and dropped her rather sizable stack of books. Brushing her hair out of her eyes, she steadied the person carefully. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention to where I was going!" Her soft voice said, her sincerity in every word.
