Only a short time ago, just over a year, everything was normal in our world. Wizards and witches went about their lives in a time of prosperity, the peace unshattered for a generation. The biggest ruckus was caused by squibs, who organized rallies and groups, demanding equal rights in the community, and in the case of one small extremist group, Magic.
They wanted Magic, the magic that they felt their wizarding brethren withheld from them, keeping them second-class citizens forever. It started out with scandalous stories in the papers, the press scrambling to cover the stories. And it led to rallies, and riots.
And finally, the peace shattered with an attack on the Ministry itself. The death of the beloved Minister Lloyd and the appointment of Minister Harkness to the position was the beginning, and there’s no end in sight.
First came the disruptions in magic, and then, a few months ago, the shadows that stalked the night became nightmarish reality. Spawned by twisted magic, born in the absence of magic where once it saturated the very air, the demons are power-hungry, thirsting after the magic the humans carry in their blood and their wands.
They’re no true beast, and their heckling cries are enough to give vampires chills. They go after anything that moves, hungry for the magic they miss, like an empty half.
---
Demons come in all shapes and sizes, nearly all at least having long, sharp claws and teeth. Their bodies are ghostly to the touch when starved of magic, though after a feast they can acquire a spongy, slimy texture, though one could pass a hand through still if they were mad enough to get near. They are swift creatures, and they will often float while prowling, though the more solid ones will walk or run.
They are not particularly smart, and they certainly not self-aware. They feed on magic, and are adapted to huntng it above all else, though they have small heat-sensors, magic will often blind those more feeble senses. Magic will only make them stronger, and although its possible to feed them magic until they burst, its often difficult and can cost the life of those willing to use this tactic.
They can be killed, and they bleed some sort of black blood when wounded. After death they fade away into shadow, which then disappears. No one knows what happens then, or even if its important.
