“I have to say, this wasn’t exactly expected.”
“No.”
“It’s not often people turn themselves in.”
“No.”
“And it’s not often they confess to crimes they weren’t even suspected of committing.”
“No.”
“And especially we don’t get high ranking members of the ministry in here, all but begging to go to Azkaban.”
“I can understand why that would be.” Jack’s face was more lined than it used to be, with exhaustion and stress. He sat straight, hands folded neatly on his knees as he faced the man across the interrogation table. It had been a long week, and the investigation was only just beginning. Jack knew it was going to get worse before anything turned to the better.
“Just do your job. And try to limit my family’s involvement. My children do not need to be dragged into this.”
There was silence as the two men regarded one another. Finally James Theodore sighed, making a final notation on the pad of paper. He laid down the pen, raising his eyes to meet Jack’s.
“Thank you Minister—“
“—I’m not—“
James held up his hand, halting the older man’s words as he spoke over him. “You still are, sir, for a little while, at least. As I was saying, we’ve been working on the case of what happened at Castle Innvar, and we’ll definitely add this to the report. There’s quite a lot of information here.”
“Yes.”
“Some of it is pretty hard to believe, sir.”
“Sometimes that happens, with the truth.” The silence that followed the Minister’s statement was broken by a knock on the door. “Come in!” James called.
